Massage FAQs

Is it okay to talk to the massage therapist during the massage?
This depends on the type of massage you are interested in. If you are doing a clinical type massage, conversation is encouraged to help the therapist know exactly what is happening to treat concerns appropriately.
If you are looking for a relaxing massage then you do what you are most comfortable with. Don’t feel like you need to talk unless you need to communicate with the therapist if you feel any discomfort or concerns.
Is massage painful?
It’s not unusual to feel some soreness after a massage. This is due to a release of lactic acid in the muscles, but it doesn’t last long.
You may also have some discomfort during your massage. This depends on the area I’m working on, any pre-existing pains, and whether the therapist is using too much pressure.
Do I have to take my clothes off?
No! Your therapist will ask you to remove clothing only as far as you feel comfortable. The therapist will leave the room while you’re undressing and will provide linens and blankets to cover you during the massage, undraping the area to be worked.
When doing the clinical massage you may be asked to remain clothed; wearing loose fitting clothes to easily work through. This will be discussed at the time of scheduling.
What if I fall asleep and drool or snore?
It’s normal to fall asleep during a massage. You might be feeling stressed and sleep-deprived, so falling asleep is normal once you’re in a relaxed state.
There’s zero judgment from me if you snore. I’m pleased you’re relaxed enough to fall asleep, and I won’t mention it.
Drooling is also common, especially if you’re on your front. Ask me for a tissue, and I’ll be glad to grab one for you.
What’ll happen at my first massage?
You will need to fill out a health history form letting the therapist know of your concerns and the goals necessary to work with these concerns.
Come prepared to talk about your medical history so that the therapist is aware of any contraindications or accommodations that I need to be aware of.
Is it okay to ask for more or less pressure?
Yes! A good massage therapist will check in with you during your massage to make sure the pressure is okay.
Be mindful that massage doesn’t have to cause you pain to be effective. Some massage techniques are pretty gentle. But do speak up and ask your therapist if you’d like more or less pressure during your session. I won’t be offended!
What if I need the bathroom?
It is recommended to go to the bathroom before your session, but it can occasionally happen that you’ll need to go during the massage.
I want you to be relaxed, so if you’re focusing on holding it in, it’ll interfere with your experience. So do speak up, and I’ll let you know where the bathroom is.
